RV Generator Repair in the East Valley

Onboard generator won’t start, surges, or shuts down? We service and repair RV generators on-site.

RV Generator Repair

For boondockers and anyone who runs the AC off-grid, the onboard generator is what keeps the lights on and the rig cool — so when it will not start or quits under load, the whole trip stops. We service and repair RV generators on-site anywhere in the East Valley. A generator that cranks but will not start, starts then dies, surges or runs rough, will not hold a load, shuts down on its own, or throws an error code — we diagnose and fix it where the rig is parked. We work on the common onboard units like Onan and Cummins, checking fuel delivery and filters, the carburetor, spark and ignition, the air filter, oil level and the low-oil shutdown, the control board and start circuit, and the load side. A lot of generator no-starts are simply old or stale fuel and a gummed-up carburetor from sitting through the off-season — exactly what happens to a snowbird rig parked all summer.

Stale fuel and the summer sit

The single most common RV generator problem we see here comes from the rig sitting. A coach parked through the Arizona summer — or a snowbird rig that sat up north all season — ends up with stale fuel and a varnished-up carburetor, and then it cranks but will not start, or starts and dies, when you fire it up for the season. We clean or rebuild the carburetor, replace fuel filters, address the stale fuel, and get it running clean again. Running the generator periodically and keeping fresh fuel in it prevents a repeat.

Won’t hold a load, surges, or shuts down

A generator that starts fine but will not run the AC, surges up and down, or shuts itself off has a different set of causes — fuel starvation under load, a governor or carburetor issue, a low-oil shutdown doing its job, an overheating problem, or a fault on the control or load side. We test it under load, read any fault codes, and trace it to the real cause so it actually carries the AC when it is 110 out and you are off-grid.

Generators — Questions We Hear a Lot

My RV generator cranks but won’t start — what is it?
After a rig has been sitting, the usual cause is stale fuel and a gummed-up carburetor, sometimes with a clogged fuel filter. We clean or rebuild the carburetor, address the old fuel, and check spark and fuel delivery to get it running clean again.
The generator starts but won’t run my air conditioner — why?
A generator that starts but cannot carry the AC is usually starving for fuel under load, has a carburetor or governor issue, or is shutting down on a protection circuit. We test it under load and trace the cause so it holds the AC when you are off-grid.
My generator shuts itself off after a while — is that normal?
No. An unexpected shutdown is usually a low-oil shutdown doing its job, an overheating issue, fuel starvation, or a control-board fault. We read any codes and find the real reason rather than just restarting it and hoping.
